  1. Unsurprisingly, consumers across the southern United States are far more likely to have subprime credit scores than consumers across the north. Minnesota had the fewest subprime consumers. In December 2016, just 21.9% of residents fell below an Equifax Risk Score of 660. Mississippi had the worst subprime rate in the nation: 48.3% of Mississippi residents had credit scores below 660 in December 2016.35

I was trying to get my score up like 50 pts and do not get a loan that backfired on me big time. I had a 682 and wanted to get into the 700s so I applied for a little personal loan like 350 bucks and I made every payment on time and paid it off 3-4 months later and 1 week after that my score goes from 682 to 609!!!

However, each model weights the information differently. This means that a FICO® Score cannot be compared directly to a VantageScore® or an Equifax Risk Score. For example, a VantageScore® does not count paid items in collections against you. However, a FICO® Score counts all collections items against you, even if you’ve paid them. Additionally, the VantageScore® counts outstanding debt against you, but the FICO® Score only considers how much credit card debt you have relative to your available credit.

Credit repair is critical to saving money on insurance, loans, and credit cards, but that’s not the only reason to repair your credit. A better credit score opens up new employment opportunities, even promotions and raises with your current employer. If you dream of starting your own business or just want the security of knowing you can borrow money when you want to, you should repair your credit sooner rather than later.

  10. Find the Best Credit Score for Your Needs:
Keep credit card balances low relative to credit limits (30 percent or lower is recommended). “Maxing out” your credit cards means you have a very high utilization rate, which significantly lowers your credit score.

This is the ultimate tried-and-true credit score booster. Unloading debt increases your score by reducing your overall debt and lowering your credit utilization rate (for credit cards, at least). Before you do anything like adding a new credit card, increasing your credit limit, or juggling balance transfers, focus on paying off your debt. Your credit score will thank you immediately.

Here are three more ways to boost a credit score over the long term:

As you begin the process of improving your credit score, keep in mind that it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but improving your score is worth the effort. A poor credit score can potentially cost you tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime. It can also become a source of serious stress, making you feel like you just can’t leave the mistakes of the past behind and move on.
While this is true, it’s the opposite of what the original question is. Paying off medial bills will increase your score, but SETTLING medical bills (like negotiating to pay less than you owe) will HURT your score, because it won’t be marked as “paid”, it will be marked as “settled”.
If you have good credit and are not concerned about overspending, one of the fastest and easiest ways to raise your credit score is to request a credit limit increase on existing accounts. For a given balance, an increased limit lowers credit utilization, which is one of the most important factors affecting your credit score. For example, if you have a $2,000 balance with a $4,000 credit limit, your utilization ratio is 50%, which is high. If your card issuer were to raise your limit to $8,000, your utilization would drop to 25%. On average, Credit Sesame found that decreasing credit utilization by 25 percentage points can result in a 30-point increase in credit score.

  13. Dispute Errors On Your Credit Reports. Look for things such asduplicate accounts, accounts that don’t belong to you, accounts thatshow a balance that you think you paid off, or payments reported latethat you think were on time. It is up to you to report it to the creditbureau by sending them a credit report dispute. You are responsible forthe accuracy of the information in your credit file, so you shouldcheck your reports at least once a year (perhaps quarterly). Forinformation on checking your reports and filing disputes, see the lastsection below.

A secured credit card is one that requires a security deposit that’s held as collateral by the card issuer. Users of secured credit cards make payments to their accounts just like they would for any unsecured card; the major difference is that the credit limit on a secured card is backed by the cash security deposit. These cards are good options for consumers with poor or limited credit history who are unable to get approval for a traditional card. Paying off the balance of an unsecured card in full (and on time) every month will help your credit score steadily rise. Credit Sesame found that by establishing improved payment history through the use of a secured credit card, Americans with limited credit history were able to increase their credit score an average of 63 points over a six-month period.
