Poor Credit Scores © 2006-2018 Zillow It’s worth the effort to improve bad or mediocre scores because those can cost you in many ways such as higher interest rates, higher insurance premiums, bigger utility deposits and fewer options for cellphone service. Improving already good scores doesn’t offer much if any payoff, so it’s usually not worth incurring extra costs to do so.

However, some credit scoring products use different ranges — such as 501 to 990. If you obtain multiple credit scores and the same range was not used, you cannot directly compare the scores. For example, a credit score of 720 within the 350 to 850 range is not the same as a credit score of 720 using the 501 to 990 range.

I would just like to say that everything he posted I tried and it worked for me. I have raised my score 50 points in just one month! I still have a long way to go, but now that I know what to do, I see it only going up from here.

Explanation: Add an explanation to your report when you dispute its contents. If there is a good reason why you weren’t able to pay bills on time — job loss, sudden illness, etc. — or you refused to pay for something because of a legitimate dispute, give the credit bureau a short statement to include in your file.

Unpaid taxes can also set you back. A paid tax lien sets you back seven years from the date the lien was paid. On the other hand, if you leave a lien unpaid it can stop you in your tracks and remain indefinitely until you pay it off. That is, except in Experian’s game where the penalty for unpaid tax liens ends after 15 years.

  9. The debt snowball approach – After making all of your minimum required payments each month, you then devote any extra money to paying down the credit card with the lowest balance first. Once you pay off that low-balance card, move on to the card with the next lowest balance.
Keeping credit card accounts open even if you’re not using them can be a good strategy for retaining a long credit history. If you cancel old credit cards, you could shorten your credit history and hurt your credit score. However, it may not be a good idea to keep a credit card open if it has an annual fee and you’re not using it.
These companies usually don’t tell you your rights under the act, or what you can do on your own for free. They tell you not to contact the three major national credit reporting companies. They tell you they can rid your reports of their negative credit information — even if the information is accurate and current. They suggest you “invent a new credit identity” and a new credit report by applying to the Internal Revenue Service for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security number.

How it works: Once you choose the secured card you prefer, you’ll open an account under your child’s name. If your teen is approved, the bank will ask for a security deposit. Most secured cards require deposits of at least $200, but there are secured cards with security deposits as low as $49. That deposit typically becomes their line of credit. For example, if the minimum security deposit is $200, the line of credit will also be $200.

If your credit card balances every month are more than 30% of your credit limits, your score is suffering, even if you’re paying off your balances in full every month by the payment due date. That’s because your statement balance is most likely what’s being reported to the credit bureaus. So, keep an eye on those balances, and consider pre-paying some of the balance if you know you’ll be above that 30% mark this month.
